The Dwijen Dinanath Arts Foundation was approached through the Rainbow Lit Fest – Queer & Inclusive by the Press Council of India (PCI), a body governed by the Information & Broadcasting Ministry, to help frame guidelines for the press to follow when it reports on the LGBTQIA+ community. While the request itself was a recognition of our work so far, it was also about a milestone for the queer community where there was an opportunity to address language and representation of the community in the media. In our endeavour to be inclusive and to ensure the highest level of detail when drafting these guidelines, we referred not only to various documents on this subject from across the globe but also involved the Nazariya Foundation.

The process took over three months leading to the adoption and issuance of our document by the PCI in September 2023. India is now amongst a handful of nations that has a government-endorsed set of norms for the press to adhere to when reporting on queer issues and life.
